Blondie's sailing fame took off in 1932, the year he was commissioned into the Royal Marines, when he sailed a fourteen-foot dinghy single-handed between Plymouth-Portsmouth-Plymouth. His military prowess began when he served in Noway in 1940; in 1944 he trained 'special forces' against the Japanese in Burma (launching 173 raids); on his return he set up the Royal Marines 'special boat service' before retiring. Only then did he throw himself into small yacht design and building (coming second in the first trans-Atlantic single-hander).
