The author trainied in Czechoslovakia but when the Germans occupied his country in early 1939 he escaped to England via Poland. Impatient to fly operationally he signed on with the French air force when progress with the RAF seemed too slow but found his way back to England and finally the RAF when France fell. He was posted to 145 Squadron flying Spitfires in September 1941. No sooner had he settled down to flying convoy patrols than we was sent to 312 Czech Squadron. He remained with 312 for the next three years, taking part in the Dieppe operation and in divebombing sorties. After the invasion he moved to 313 Czech Squadron in early 1945. After the war he returned to his homeland and became a Czech air force staff offiver and flying instructor.
