Flights of the forgotten:Special Duties Operations in World War TwoK.A. Merrick
FIRST EDITION. Hard cover
. Arms and Armour, 1989. 243
pages. Photographs. Fine
book
in fine dust jacket. Great copy!
A very detailed history of the men and women who performed the quietly heroic and fundamental role of fuelling and maintaining Allied support for the resistance teams behind enemy lines. The story is divided into three sections:Western Europe, The Balkans, and The Far East, all illustrated with b/w photographs. This is a wonderful association copy between the author and two of these great fliers: it is inscribed "To Peter Kingsford-Smith (One of the Forgotten) with much appreciation for your kind help. Ken Merrick 1989". This copy also bears the signature of Peter's brother, Rollo Kingsford Smith, RAAF Wing Commander 1938-1949, and includes an envelope with written page numbers to note, as well as a few brief notes on a couple pages. The Kingsford-Smith brothers had flying and military service in their blood, being nephews of the famous Australian aviator, Charles Kingsford-Smith.
