Laurence Irving was recalled to the R.A.F. in October 1939 and was assigned to the Intelligence Department at the Air Ministry. He was posted to H.Q. British Air Forces in France and made responsible for official communiques and to persuade war correspondents to abide by the rules of censorship applied. With the surrender of France he returned to the Air Ministry maintaining that had a system of local defence been in place the German armoured thrust could have been brought to a halt. Through a series of postings he was eventually appointed as Senior Intelligence Officer to 35 Wing, which was involved in reconaissance and the prompt distribution of the intelligence gathered. He highlighted the need for greater and closer co-operation between the Army/Air planning staffs to reduce the high casualty rates at the time. This personal record highlights the courage and devotion to duty that brought about the eventual success of the European campaign.
