The author joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and presents, here, the story of his wartime experiences. He vividly recalls a crash on the Yorkshire Dales in a Whitley in 1941. The two pilots were killed but the author, the navigator, miraculously escaped. Elsewhere he describes his parachute landing on the last night of May 1942 where he watched Cologne aflame sixty miles away. A week later he was caught by four Gestapo men and at Stalag Luft III he provides an intimate view of the legless-ace Douglas Bader and ‘Wings’ Day whose escape efforts were legendary.
