The author, Rear-Admiral Ben Bryant, CB, DSO and Two Bars, DSC, RN., survived more wartime patrols than any other submarine commander of WWII. Between 1940 and 1943 two ‘S’ class submarines, SEALION and SAFARI, were constantly in the headlines and achieved remarkable success under Ben Bryant’s command. During his patrols the author torpedoed or sank by gunfire 32 enemy ships and damaged a great many more. He took part in the grim Norwegian campaign and survived depth-charge attacks, ramming, and suffocation. He landed and took off secret agents in occupied Europe, and, when based at Malta, attacked Rommel’s vital supply lines to North Africa.
