This is the story of Derek Lang, an off icier of the Scottish Cameron Highlander regiment, wounded and taken prisoner in 1940 at Saint Valery en Caux, after the battles of the Somme and Seine-Maritime. Escaping twice, he makes his way towards freedom through Le Touquet, Belgium, Lille and its surrounding area, Paris under the Occupation, the Dordogne crossing the Demarcation Line in a colorful and vivid episode., and finally Marseille, Beirut and Jerusalem. Time spent in the company of "Lulu", a buccaneer in the Marseillais underworld, is thrilling and the author's point of view of the politics in Lebanon in 1940 is equally interesting. At last, in 1944, he returns at the head of his regiment to liberate Saint Valery. The style remains vivacious and full of punch. The account reads like an adventure story, and can be enjoyed by all ages. but it is above all written in gratitude for the courage and generosity of the French people.
