Major Philip Newman, a surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps, was one of the doctors selected by ballot to stay behind with the wounded in Dunkirk. Later transferred to various POW camps in Germany he devoted much of his energy to aiding escape plans and succeeded in escaping himself but was recaptured. When he was sent to another camp in Rouen, he was determined not to remain a prisoner any longer. This memoir is the gripping story of how he escaped from the camp, and of his journey through France to the Pyrenees, with the help of French civilians and of the Pat Escape Line. It is a tribute not only to the unquenchable fortitude of the individual in adversity, but to the French Resistance and the men and women who risked instant death in the cause of continuing the fight against Hitler.
