Before the fiction of "Red October" there was the reality of submarine warfare, the most dangerous of all combat services in World War II, the first, and so far, the last war in which submarines played a major role. The German U-boat command lost three out of four men who served. The British losses were equally staggering. Coote's Submariner is a detailed first-person account of what it was like. Captain Coote writes of the patrols in the North Sea and the Mediterranean, known during World War II as the "German Lake"; of attacking and being attacked, pinned down and battered by depth charges, the odds always against survival. He commanded (as the youngest commander in the history of the Royal Navy) three front-line attack submarines, and made a tour with the U.S. Navy submarine Nautilus. It is an exciting tale crowded with unforgettable characters under the constant threat of death — told with a storyteller's art.
