The 11th Armoured Division, famous for its Black Bull insignia, was formed in March 1941 and came to be regarded as being among the best armoured divisions in NW Europe during WWII. It landed in Normandy a week after D Day and fought through France, took Antwerp, pressed on through Holland and into Germany, liberating Belsen and on to Lubeck and the Baltic, ending up on the Danish frontier. It suffered 10,000 casualties of whom some 2,000 were killed. The GOC throughout the NW Europe campaign was Major-General Pip" Roberts who, at thirty-seven, was the youngest divisional commander. It landed in France with two brigades, 29th Armoured and 159th Infantry and these remained with the division to the end. Twelve regiments which wore the Black Bull sign have contributed to this account, with memories from troop commanders, riflemen, bombardiers, signalmen, tank crews and the GOC himself..
