During two world conflicts in which first the Kaiser's, then Hitler's Germany was our principal enemy, blockade by sea formed an important part of British war strategy. This was exerted by a special squadron of warships stationed in northern waters to intercept enemy merchantmen, and stop and examine for contraband all neutral vessels entering or leaving the North Sea. At the outset of both wars the squadron was composed of ageing and defective vessels. Subsequently their duties were taken over by requisitioned. liners converted into armed merchant cruisers. Because of their vulnerability their initial letters 'A.M.C.' were said by their crews to stand for Admiralty Made Coffins. They had to endure appalling weather conditions, and although nominally backed up by the Fleet, their fate if attacked by enemy warships could be quick and decisive before help could reach them. Their losses were heavy, yet although daily facing the threats of U-boats, mines, surface warships, and, in the second conflict, air attacks, they never faltered. The deprivations brought about by our naval blockade in the first World War eventually broke the morale of the enemy's home front. In the second, although conditions radically changed following the Nazi conquest of much of Europe, German merchant shipping was thereby forced to give up trying to run its gauntlet.
