The spiritual autobiography of a man who for four years lived in the most degrading material conditions, and yet emerged from this experience a mature man, transformed in character. Although it is set in Japanese POW camps during the Second World War, it is not exclusively "about" that war. The author was one of thousands of British officers and men captured by the Japanese in their swift advance through South-East Asia in 1941. After trying to escape in Java, he was shipped to a POW camp in Japan and imprisoned there until the end of the war. Throughout his imprisonment he kept secret diaries - this book is based on those diaries. It is a graphic and moving record of a man's struggle against a system of oppression, in which the smallest achievements [a bar of soap, half a Red Cross parcel] take on a vast significance in helping to restore human dignity. The book gives a remarkable insight into the behaviour of men under extreme pressure - whether British, American or Japanese.
