Between 1919 and 1939, momentous changes in the distribution of power took place and at the end of this turmoil after the world had gone from crisis to crisis, Britain found herself facing a growing threat. Japan, following her conquest of Manchuria, was attempting to assert her ascendancy over China. German military power dominated Central Europe ; and Italy, following her campaigns in Abyssinia, had grand ideas of taking control of the Mediterranean _ a dream also shared by Spain and Albania. In the midst of all this the Royal Navy was looking after British interests and trying to keep the peace which often involved delicate and explosive situations requiring the highest degree of tact, patience and restraint. This 1939 book examines these events in the first part of the book, together with an account of the new Arms Race and the ending of the Naval Treaties. In the second part the author examines the strength and strategies of each of the great naval fleets, finally considering the possibility of war and devoting whole chapters to British naval deployment in the Mediterranean, North Sea, Baltic and Pacific. A major contemporary account of the role of the Royal Navy in the immediate pre-war era.
